Embedded Player - Megaphone by Spotify

2022-2023 | Role: Lead UI/UX

The embeddable player was a vital tool for Spotify publishers, particularly for those who heavily invested in their online presence, such as Cadence 13, Vox, Fox, and LinkedIn.

With an average of over 25 million plays monthly, Megaphone received numerous publisher requests and internal suggestions for improvements.

Publishers demanded more customization options, including video integration and access to metrics. Introducing these features called for a new embedded player builder.

  • Publishers: Aimed at those seeking more customization and flexible embedded players.

Listeners: Catering to those desiring a pleasant listener experience.

    • The Megaphone embeddable player, last updated in 2019, is experiencing issues with responsiveness, localization, and loading.

    • Technical limitations prevent Megaphone from utilizing Spotify’s existing player.

    • The current player lacks support for the newly launched video podcasts.

  • To address the necessary changes, we opted for a strategy that involved making quick initial fixes and breaking down the work into manageable phases for effective execution.

    Phase I:

    • Address performance issues in the player.

    • Implement minor styling updates for functional display across various sizes.

    • No introduction of new features.

    • Current publisher implementations remain unchanged.

    • Include metrics in publisher reporting.

    Phase II:

    • Introduce new options and configurations for the web player.

    • Create an embedded player builder.

    • Update the external show page to match Spotify's look and feel

    • This will require publishers to update their existing implementations.

  • Phase 1 was successfully launched in June of 2022, with the additional work put on pause until 2023.
