Spotify acquired lead enterprise podcasting software Megaphone in 2022. “Smart Ad Locations” aimed to equip Megaphone with intelligent, automated ad placement technology.

By leveraging machine learning, Megaphone aimed to streamline the time-intensive aspects of ad placement for publishers and significantly boost revenue from previously unutilized ad spaces.

  • Publishers: Aimed at those seeking quicker monetization, enhanced earnings, and a better overall experience.

    Spotify: Focused on boosting monetization opportunities and developing a unique platform.

    Listeners: Catering to those desiring a pleasant ad experience.

    • This tool will automate time-consuming tasks, making the process more efficient for publishers.

    • There are over 1B unmonetized monthly impressions on shows missing ad markers.

    • Getting an episode ready for monetization is currently filled with repetitive steps and complex interfaces, and it lacks proper guidance for publishers. We see a big chance to improve this by offering better instruction and support.

  • • Led design efforts for a top 10 companywide initiative, overseeing the feature release of an AI-generated ad placement tool.

    • Conducted remote workshops, refined planning with the Product Manager, and aligned with product leadership.

    • Collaborated with User Research, planning user interviews, creating prototypes, and implementing changes.

    • Partnered with content design and worked closely with legal and naming committees.

  • The product was successfully delivered and scheduled for a Q1 2024 launch.

    Unlocked 1.3 billion additional ad impression opportunities per year while maintaining ad skip and user drop-off rates.

    Contributing to over 1500 podcasts and 90 publishers opting in.
