Polaris - Megaphone by Spotify

2022 | Role: UI/UX, Conceptualization and Strategy

Throughout 2021 and 2022, Spotify expanded its podcasting capabilities by acquiring leading tools like Megaphone, Anchor, Chartable, Podsights, and Whooskkaa. Each platform brought its unique value and features to Spotify's podcasting ecosystem.

However, this integration presented a challenge for clients navigating different platforms for various features and insights. Several solutions were explored, ranging from a complete system rebuild to creating an omni-channel experience. 'Polaris' emerged as a strategic concept envisioning a unified platform, starting with Megaphone, to offer our enterprise clients an integrated, omni-channel experience.

  • After Spotify acquired five podcasting products, each with its own features, user base, and product expectations, the company faced a unique set of integration challenges. Notably, some users hesitated to join the Spotify ecosystem, perceiving it as a competitor.

The business strategy involved keeping Podsights and Chartable as standalone funnel products. Anchor was rebranded into 'Spotify for Podcasters'’ a dedicated creator tool, while Megaphone remained the flagship enterprise product.

  • This variety of platforms led to a complex scenario for users, especially those with accounts across multiple platforms. This situation raised a critical question: How could Spotify effectively combine these diverse offerings into a unified, best-in-class publisher platform that catered cohesively to all user segments?

Our team explored the potential benefits of merging Spotify's varied podcasting products. We focused on developing features like predictive insights and enhanced data analysis. We considered two primary approaches: either showcasing each product's strengths within the combined offering or taking a more unified approach by dissolving individual product brands and transforming them into an integrated set of features—this strategic decision aimed to enhance Spotify's podcasting platform's overall value and user experience.

    • I worked with a 5-person team, which included content design, to conduct workshops, research, and map out user flows effectively.

    • I finalized the designs and flow and prepared them for presentation.

    • Co-presented our findings and designs to the company's senior leaders.

  • The direction we proposed was met with great enthusiasm by senior leadership and engineers. However, following the initial Spotify layoffs in January 2023, all decisions regarding the future combination of products were put on hold.
