Winnie App Exercise

2022 | Role: Personal Development Exercise View Prototype

During my personal development week, I chose to redesign a native app flow from an everyday application I use. I focused on Winnie, a service dedicated to locating daycares and schools. This app assists users in reviewing details about providers, checking ratings, and exploring enrollment options, all tailored to specific locations. I aimed to identify areas where the app's user experience and functionality could be enhanced for better user engagement.

Home Page

    • Missing & Unresponsive User Data: Data entered information during sign-up isn't pre-populated in the search feature, and modifications in user data don't alter search results or the initial welcome page content.

    • Inconsistent Prioritization: The platform's emphasis is more on community chat than providers, diverging from expected user-centric features.

    • Zero Personalization: Absence of a welcome message for users upon accessing the platform.

    • Welcome Message Integration: Implement a dismissible welcome message that guides users about the filter's location, enhancing initial user orientation.

    • Toolbar Optimization: Merge Notifications and Messages into the toolbar for streamlined access and reduced clutter.

    • Chat Feature Adjustment: Reduce the visibility of Chat on the homepage, perhaps by displaying only two posts instead of 20, to shift focus.

    • Community Chat Accessibility: Add a community chat icon to the toolbar, allowing users to filter chat results directly from their feed.

    • Navigation Enhancements: Develop a universal search and filter settings section within the navigation menu for more intuitive and centralized user interaction.

Results View

    • Data and Imagery Source: Uncertainty about the credibility of Winnie due to all data and imagery being scraped.

    • Lack of User Ratings: The absence of user ratings makes it challenging to gauge service quality.

    • Missing Visible Tags: No visible tags to assist in quick identification or categorization.

    • Limited Search Accessibility: The search function is only available from the results view, restricting usability.

    • Ineffective Onboarding Filters: Filter preferences set during onboarding are not reflected in actual use.

    • Complex Filter Setting: The need for multiple taps to set filters indicates a cumbersome user experience.

    • Cluttered Map and List View: The map is merged with the list view, complicating navigation and result browsing.

    • Image and Rating Adjustment: Replace scraped images with a dedicated space for user ratings and tags to enhance credibility and information clarity.

    • Tag Prioritization: Focus on high-priority tagging elements such as age range, in-home availability, and highlighting 'Winnie Favorites.'

    • View Toggle Feature: Introduce a toggle switch for users to easily choose between list view and map view, improving navigation and user choice.

    • Centralized Filter and Search: Establish a universal location for filter settings and search functionality, streamlining user experience and accessibility.

    • 'Winnie Favorites' Special Tag: Develop a distinct tag for 'Winnie Favorites' to indicate options that surpass primary verification and align with company-set standards, similar to features on Care and Angie's List.

Filter

  • Usability Issues Identified:

    • Inefficient Filter Setting: The current filter requires multiple taps to set a single specification, leading to a cumbersome user experience.

    • Extended Horizontal Scroll: Users face a lengthy horizontal scroll to view all available options, which can be time-consuming and inconvenient.

    • Lack of Sorting Functionality: The absence of a sorting feature limits the ability to organize search results according to specific criteria.

    • Non-retentive User Settings: The system does not retain individual user settings, necessitating repeated adjustments for each use.

    • Centralized Filter and Search Hub: Create a universal location for all filter settings and search functionalities, simplifying navigation and accessibility.

    • Comprehensive Filter Page: Implement a more thorough, single-page layout for setting all filters and sorting options simultaneously, akin to the approach used by Care.

    • Adaptive Search Interface: Design the search feature to function as a drawer or an overlay, with the final implementation to be determined based on user testing results.
